EDITION #37 | September 20, 2026
Your weekly dose of music news + VibesXS updates
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
🎵 Welcome back to Vibes Weekly! This week delivered chart history, a major concert-industry shake-up, a superstar comeback and a fiery Madrid derby. Music-history bonus: September 20, 1976 saw the debut of Television at CBGB in New York, part of the club scene that helped define the downtown punk era and reshape alternative music. On this date in 1969, John Lennon told Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr that he was leaving The Beatles, a private decision that became one of pop history’s defining turning points before the group officially dissolved in 1970.
📈 ELLA LANGLEY TIES THE HOT 100 RECORD
Ella Langley has officially reached 22 weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 with “Choosin’ Texas,” tying Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas Is You” for the chart’s longest-running No. 1. The milestone comes after an uninterrupted run that began earlier this year.
The song is also a major streaming and radio success: Billboard Canada reported more than 1.5 billion worldwide streams and estimated nearly $13.9 million in global revenue from audio and video streams, digital sales and U.S. radio airplay through its previous chart week.
One more week at No. 1 would give Langley the outright all-time record. That makes the next Hot 100 update one of the biggest chart-watch moments of the fall.
🏆 REAL MADRID FALLS IN A FIERY MADRID DERBY
Atlético Madrid defeated Real Madrid 2–1 on September 20 at the Metropolitano, moving above their city rivals into second place in LaLiga with 16 points. Real Madrid now sits on 15 points, while Barcelona leads the table with 21 after winning its first seven league matches.
Alejandro Grimaldo converted a 53rd-minute penalty after Real defender Dean Huijsen was sent off, and Jonathan David doubled Atlético’s advantage six minutes later. Antonio Rüdiger pulled one back with an 89th-minute header, but Atlético held on.
The derby was also surrounded by refereeing controversy. Real manager José Mourinho publicly questioned several first-half decisions after the match, while Atlético manager Diego Simeone called for respect around the heated rivalry.
The Premier League delivered one of Sunday’s wildest scorelines as Manchester City beat Sunderland 5–3 at the Etihad. City moved to 15 points from five league matches, while Sunderland’s Brian Brobbey scored a hat trick in a game that produced eight goals. Reuters reports that City has now won seven straight matches in all competitions.
🎬 CÉLINE RETURNS, MADONNA GETS READY
Céline Dion returned to the stage in Paris this month for her first full concert in six years, launching a sellout residency after her extended break from performing. Reuters reported that her planned run includes 26 concerts over the next eight months.
And next weekend brings another major pop-culture moment: Madonna will open the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards on September 27, marking her first live VMA performance in 23 years. She enters the ceremony with 11 nominations, while Snoop Dogg hosts the Los Angeles event.
The announced performer lineup also includes Gunna, LISA, RAYE, Shaboozey, SIENNA SPIRO, GENER8ION and Yung Lean. Shaboozey’s “Cowgirl” has already passed 100 million official streams, according to CBS/MTV’s announcement.
📰 FEATURED STORY: REAL MADRID–ATLÉTICO DELIVERS THE WEEKEND’S BIGGEST SPORTS DRAMA
The Madrid derby turned into a red-and-white celebration — and a major early-season statement.
Atlético Madrid took advantage of a dramatic second half to beat Real Madrid 2–1 in front of a charged Metropolitano crowd. The result moved Atlético to 16 points, one ahead of Real and five behind perfect-start Barcelona.
The turning point came immediately after halftime. Huijsen was shown a straight red for bringing down Giuliano Simeone in the box, giving Atlético a penalty. Grimaldo converted in the 53rd minute, then David finished Atlético’s second goal six minutes later.
Real Madrid refused to disappear. Rüdiger’s 89th-minute header gave the visitors late hope, while goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois made several important saves to keep the score within reach. Atlético survived the final pressure and collected the derby points.
The match also highlighted how quickly the LaLiga picture can change. Barcelona’s 3–1 victory over Sevilla the previous day extended its perfect league record to seven wins, with captain Raphinha scoring a hat trick and reaching 12 league goals.
- 2–1: Atlético Madrid’s final score against Real Madrid.
- 16 points: Atlético’s total after the derby.
- 15 points: Real Madrid’s total after seven matches.
- 21 points: Barcelona’s perfect-start total.
- 89th minute: Rüdiger’s late header for Real.
- 12 league goals: Raphinha’s total after his Sevilla hat trick.
Key Takeaway: The Madrid derby has reshaped the early LaLiga picture, with Atlético moving ahead of Real while Barcelona maintains a perfect start.
