EDITION #38 | September 27, 2026
Your weekly dose of music news + VibesXS updates
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
This week’s Vibes Weekly newsletter covers a chart record, the 2026 MTV VMAs, and fall’s biggest music-and-sports calendar. 🎵 Fun music-history note: on September 27, 1964, The Beach Boys made their first appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show, performing “I Get Around” — another reminder that a TV stage can become a launchpad for a new era of pop culture.
📈 MUSIC MAKES CHART HISTORY
Ella Langley has officially moved from record-chaser to record-holder. “Choosin’ Texas” logged its 23rd week at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, surpassing Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas Is You,” which had held the overall mark with 22 weeks.
The achievement is especially striking because “Choosin’ Texas” has built its run across country radio, streaming and digital sales rather than relying on a seasonal spike. The song is also co-written by Miranda Lambert, Luke Dick and Joybeth Taylor, giving the record another Nashville connection.
Taylor Swift also kept the release cycle moving, announcing the expanded The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore with four newly recorded songs, while her new single “Patient Zero” arrived September 25. Meanwhile, Olivia Rodrigo launched her 59-show North American Unraveled Tour in Hartford on September 25.
🏆 SPORTS & ENTERTAINMENT KEEP THE ENERGY HIGH
The WNBA playoffs opened Sunday with headline performances. A’ja Wilson scored 38 points, grabbed 16 rebounds and blocked four shots as Las Vegas defeated Indiana 102–85 in Game 1, while Breanna Stewart posted 34 points and 12 rebounds as New York beat top-seeded Minnesota 91–75.
The AP also named Wilson its WNBA Player of the Year for an unprecedented third straight season, while Angel Reese was named Defensive Player of the Year. The postseason is now underway with the league’s top eight teams battling through the opening round.
Baseball is turning the page, too. The Houston Astros clinched the AL West on the final day of the regular season, beating the Athletics 9–0 to finish 81–81. That sends MLB straight into Wild Card action beginning September 29.
At the movies, Avengers: Endgame Encore returned to No. 1 at the domestic box office with $26 million, while the global total reached $86 million. Seven years after its original theatrical run, the Marvel re-release is once again proving the staying power of event cinema.
🔥 FALL’S LIVE-MUSIC SWITCH FLIPS ON
Saturday night delivered another crossover moment when KATSEYE made its Saturday Night Live debut, performing “Animal” and “Hootie Frutti” from its WILD EP. The group arrived just weeks after its first Billboard 200 No. 1, making September a major career chapter.
Meanwhile, the 2026 MTV VMAs are taking over Los Angeles tonight, September 27, with Snoop Dogg hosting and Madonna, LISA, RAYE and other major names on the performance lineup. Taylor Swift is set to receive the inaugural Artist Director Honors, which will bring her career VMA total to 31.
And the festival calendar is not slowing down. Austin City Limits begins October 2 with Charli XCX, RÜFÜS DU SOL, Twenty One Pilots, Lorde and Skrillex among the Weekend One headliners, setting up one of the biggest live-music weekends of early fall.
📰 FEATURED STORY: THE VMAS ENTER A NEW ERA
Taylor Swift, Madonna, LISA and a new award headline a massive night for music.
The 2026 MTV VMAs arrive at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles with a format packed with history. The ceremony airs September 27 at 7:30 p.m. ET, with Snoop Dogg serving as host and CBS joining MTV for the live broadcast.
Taylor Swift enters the night with nine nominations and the inaugural Artist Director Honors. With the new honor, she is set to become the most awarded artist in VMA history, reaching 31 wins and moving past Beyoncé’s previous total.
Madonna leads the nomination field with 11 nods and is also returning to the VMA stage for the first time in 23 years. The show also brings back the Best Dance category after a seven-year absence and introduces a wide group of first-time nominees.
For music fans, the night is also a snapshot of where pop is moving: global girl groups, K-pop, dance-pop, legacy icons and crossover performers are sharing the same stage. The result is less about one sound dominating and more about how many different audiences now collide inside one awards show.
- 31: Taylor Swift’s projected VMA career total after the new honor.
- 11: Madonna’s 2026 nominations.
- 9: Taylor Swift’s 2026 nominations.
- 23: years since Madonna last performed at the VMAs.
- 7: years since the Best Dance category last appeared.
Key Takeaway: The 2026 VMAs are turning a traditional awards night into a meeting point for pop history, global fandom and the next generation of music culture.
