Your weekly dose of music, entertainment + VIBESXS updates
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
This week’s Vibes Weekly newsletter moves from two very different new albums to a box-office shake-up, a high-stakes soccer appeal and the October games calendar—plus a new way to find your next VIBESXS game. On this date in 1969, The Beatles’ Abbey Road entered the UK Official Albums Chart at No. 1—a chart debut that began a long-running story. Official Charts
🎧 NEW ALBUMS BRING TWO DISTINCT MOODS
Friday brought new full-length releases from two very different voices. Miranda Lambert returned with Crisco, her eleventh studio album, leaning into a country-disco sound with sweeping strings and a brighter, dance-ready pulse. The Associated Press has a first listen.
Victoria Monét also released Frequency of Love, a 22-track album following 2023’s Jaguar II. Her North American tour is scheduled to begin later this month. Read the AP report.
🎬 MOVIES: “VERITY” WINS THE WEEKEND
Amazon MGM’s Verity, adapted from Colleen Hoover’s novel and starring Dakota Johnson and Anne Hathaway, opened at No. 1 in North American theaters with an estimated $32.6 million. The weekend’s sharp counterpoint was Digger: Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s Tom Cruise satire brought in about $8 million domestically and $12 million across 74 international markets, against a reported production cost of at least $125 million. The Associated Press breaks down the box-office results and the pressure surrounding Warner Bros. as its Paramount acquisition approaches.
A re-release also rewrote the all-time chart: Avengers: Endgame moved just ahead of Avatar, reaching an estimated $2.9255 billion worldwide versus $2.9237 billion, not adjusted for inflation. It is a reminder that a theatrical reissue can still move the industry’s biggest headline years after a film’s first run.
🎮 GAMES & RELEASES: OCTOBER STARTS FAST
Gears of War: E-Day is scheduled for its worldwide launch on Tuesday, October 6, across Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC and Steam, with day-one access through Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass. The launch follows early access for eligible players. Xbox Wire confirms the release details; PC Gamer’s October release calendar tracks the month’s wider slate.
⚽ SOCCER: MAN CITY APPEALS AS THE WSL DELIVERS
Manchester City has filed its appeal after an independent Premier League commission found the club guilty of serious financial-rule breaches spanning nine seasons and most of the related non-cooperation charges. City says the ruling contains material errors; the appeal is pending, and no sanction has been announced. The league lists possible outcomes ranging from a reprimand or fine to a points deduction or expulsion, so the case remains unresolved. The Premier League published the commission findings; AP reports on City’s appeal and the process ahead.
There was drama on the pitch too. London City Lionesses handed Tottenham its first top-flight defeat of the season, winning 6–1 with Alexia Putellas scoring twice. Chelsea beat West Ham 3–0 to move top of the Women’s Super League, having played a match more than Manchester City. Sky Sports’ Sunday round-up covers the full WSL matchday.
⚾ OCTOBER PLAYOFFS AND FESTIVALS ARE UNDERWAY
Major League Baseball’s Division Series opened Saturday: the Chicago White Sox took Game 1 from Cleveland 3–0, while the Los Angeles Dodgers beat Atlanta 5–3. The series continue this week. Check the official MLB postseason schedule for current matchups and times.
Austin City Limits Music Festival is in its first weekend at Zilker Park, October 2–4, and returns October 9–11. The official ACL schedule has set times and the Weekend Two lineup.
