Vibes Weekly #33 | Chart History in the Making, Toronto’s Biggest Concert Weekend Yet! 🎵

EDITION #33 | August 23, 2026

Your weekly dose of music news + VibesXS updates

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

This week’s Vibes Weekly newsletter: the final stretch of summer brought a stacked New Music Friday, a chart record still being written in real time, and a huge weekend of live music in Toronto. Fun music-history note: August 23 marks the anniversary of a young Freddie Bulsara — soon to be known as Freddie Mercury — making his live debut with the band Ibex at the Octagon Theatre in Bolton, England, back in 1969, years before Queen would change rock history.

🎵 A STACKED NEW MUSIC FRIDAY

August 21 delivered one of the busiest release days of the summer. Weezer dropped The Gold Album, Brandon Flowers of The Killers released his solo LP Thrasher, and Sam Smith put out Hazel Eyes. Jorja Smith also released What Are the Odds — and immediately followed it with a 2027 Australian tour announcement covering Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne.

Elsewhere on the release calendar, Rapsody, Denzel Curry and Dan + Shay all had new projects land the same day, making it one of the most genre-spanning Fridays of the year.

📈 ELLA LANGLEY CHASES A HOT 100 RECORD

Ella Langley‘s “Choosin’ Texas” logged an 18th week at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 this week, keeping alive one of the most remarkable chart runs in recent memory. Up top on the Billboard 200, Stray Kids‘ THIS & THAT holds strong at No. 1, with Ariana Grande‘s petal, Olivia Rodrigo‘s you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love and Ella Langley‘s own Dandelion rounding out a genuinely stacked top five.

🏆 KLAY THOMPSON HEADS TO MIAMI

Four-time NBA champion Klay Thompson is heading to the Miami Heat on a two-year, roughly $13 million deal after reaching a buyout with the Dallas Mavericks — with a reported agreement to sign in Miami coming within minutes of the buyout going through. The Heat had eyed Thompson’s outside shooting all offseason as a fit alongside Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo, while Thompson himself was reportedly prioritizing a real shot at contending.

Meanwhile, the Premier League’s new season kicked off with a genuinely wild opening weekend. Hull City stunned Manchester United 2–0, Everton shut out Crystal Palace 2–0, Ipswich Town edged Sunderland 2–1, and Leeds United won 1–0 at Nottingham Forest — a rough Matchweek 1 for several of last season’s bigger names.

📅 TORONTO TAKES OVER FOR A HUGE CONCERT WEEKEND

Ed Sheeran brought the LOOP Tour to Rogers Centre for three sold-out shows, while BTS lit up Rogers Stadium with the ARIRANG World Tour the very same weekend — turning Toronto into arguably the biggest live-music city on the planet for a few days running.

🔥 FEATURED STORY: CAN “CHOOSIN’ TEXAS” BREAK THE ALL-TIME RECORD?

Eighteen weeks at No. 1 — and the record is officially in sight.

Ella Langley‘s “Choosin’ Texas” isn’t just having a long run at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 — it’s chasing history. The track has now spent 18 weeks at No. 1, and industry watchers are increasingly pointing toward a genuine shot at the all-time record for most weeks atop the chart, a mark that currently sits in the mid-20s.

What makes the run notable is how it’s happening: not through a single viral spike, but through sustained multi-format dominance — country radio, streaming, and social-driven discovery all pulling in the same direction week after week, at a time when most No. 1s cycle out within a month.

  • 18: consecutive weeks at Hot 100 No. 1
  • Mid-20s: approximate weeks needed to break the all-time record
  • #4: “Dandelion,” Langley’s own album, simultaneously in the Billboard 200 top five
  • Multi-format: radio, streaming and social all still driving new listeners to the song

It’s a reminder that in an era where chart runs are usually measured in weeks, not months, a song can still build the kind of sustained, cross-format momentum that used to define an earlier generation of chart-toppers.

Key Takeaway: “Choosin’ Texas” has gone from a country hit to a genuine chart-history storyline — worth watching over the coming weeks as it closes in on the record.
