This week’s Vibes Weekly newsletter follows a video-game film to the top of the box office, a Milwaukee team back in the World Series for the first time since 1982, and a pop team-up fans have waited years to hear. 🎵 On this date in 1977, Reggie Jackson hit three home runs in Game 6 of the World Series, clinching the title for the Yankees and tying a record held by Babe Ruth. The Hall of Fame recalls the night “Mr. October” was born.
🎬 ENTERTAINMENT: A GAME FRANCHISE FIGHTS ITS WAY TO NO. 1
Street Fighter, the live-action take on Capcom’s fighting-game series, opened at No. 1 with an estimated $31 million in North America and $51 million worldwide. Legendary and Capcom co-produced it on an $82 million budget. Audiences gave it a B- CinemaScore, and Rotten Tomatoes showed 40% from critics and 80% from audiences.
The weekend’s breakout was You Can See Everything, A24’s Nathan Fielder documentary, which opened to $15 million from only 855 screens, the biggest documentary opening in at least 13 years, according to TheWrap. Whalefall debuted with $8 million. Last week’s winner, Other Mommy, fell 70% to $8.3 million in its second weekend. All figures are Sunday estimates until Monday’s actuals.
🏟️ SPORTS: A BRONCOS OVERTIME, A TEXANS FINISH AND A RAYS LEAD
On Thursday night, the Denver Broncos beat the Seattle Seahawks 17–14 in overtime. Jason Myers’ 34-yard field goal tied it with three seconds left, and after Ja’Quan McMillian intercepted Sam Darnold in overtime, Wil Lutz won it from 53 yards. Denver sacked Darnold five times and moved to 4–2.
In the Premier League on Saturday, Liverpool won 2–1 at Brentford. Keane Lewis-Potter headed the hosts in front just before half-time, Victor Muñoz equalised, and Alexander Isak scored the winner in the 70th minute. Brentford were reduced to ten men in first-half stoppage time and finished with nine. Manchester City beat Ipswich Town 3–2, Chelsea won 2–0 at Everton, and Aston Villa won 1–0 at Newcastle.
Sunday brought more of the same. Arsenal won 1–0 at Nottingham Forest, and Leeds United and Manchester United drew 1–1.
In the NFL, the Houston Texans beat the Jacksonville Jaguars 34–31 in London, with Ka’imi Fairbairn’s field goal coming as time expired, and the Kansas City Chiefs beat the Los Angeles Chargers 22–6 to stay unbeaten. In the ALCS, the Tampa Bay Rays beat the Cleveland Guardians 3–1 in Game 5 behind seven innings from Drew Rasmussen, and lead the series 3–2.

🎵 MUSIC: A BUSY NEW MUSIC FRIDAY

Tinie Tempah returned with The Night’s Not Dead, his first project in nine years, and Take That released their tenth album, Dreamers. Max Richter’s While The Flood Rages landed just ahead of National Album Day on Saturday.
On the Billboard Hot 100, Taylor Swift’s “Patient Zero” held No. 1 for a second week. It ended Ella Langley’s record 24-week run with “Choosin’ Texas,” now at No. 2. Stella Lefty’s “Boston” climbed to No. 3, and Drake and Don Toliver’s “Solar Eclipse” debuted at No. 5.
Pop fans also got a team-up: Olivia Rodrigo released a remix of “expectations” featuring Chappell Roan, Roan’s first time as a featured guest on another artist’s song. Its video is a retro game-show parody hosted by David Byrne.
📰 FEATURED STORY: THE BREWERS END A 44-YEAR WAIT
Milwaukee was an American League team the last time it reached the World Series. Now it has a National League pennant.
The Milwaukee Brewers swept the Los Angeles Dodgers 4–0 in the NLCS, finishing on Thursday with a 6–4 win at Dodger Stadium. They had to come from behind to do it: Shohei Ohtani’s three-run homer in the second inning helped put Los Angeles up 4–0 early.
Milwaukee fought back. Jake Bauers, the series MVP, hit a ground-rule double in the fourth and drew a bases-loaded walk in the fifth to force in the tying run. Garrett Mitchell then homered to put the Brewers ahead in the sixth, and David Hamilton added an insurance homer in the ninth. Aaron Ashby pitched three scoreless innings for the save.
The win sends Milwaukee to its second World Series. The first came in 1982, when the club was in the American League and lost to the St. Louis Cardinals in seven games. It is the franchise’s first National League pennant, and it comes after an MLB-best 103 wins in the regular season.
The sweep also made some history. ESPN reports the Brewers are the first team to sweep a best-of-seven postseason series after trailing in every game, and the first to sweep a team that had swept them the year before. It also ended the Dodgers’ bid to become the first National League club to win three straight titles.
The World Series opens Friday, October 23 at American Family Field, the first Fall Classic game ever played there, with Game 2 on October 24 (both on FOX). Milwaukee’s opponent will come from the Guardians–Rays ALCS, where Tampa Bay leads 3–2 with Game 6 on Monday night.
- 4–0: the Brewers’ NLCS sweep of the Dodgers.
- 103: regular-season wins, the most in the majors.
- 44 years: since the Brewers’ last World Series, in 1982.
- First: National League pennant in franchise history.
Key Takeaway: After trailing early in the clincher and in every game of the series, Milwaukee swept the reigning champion Dodgers and earned a return to the World Series, its first since 1982. The Fall Classic starts Friday, and the Brewers still have four wins to go.
