Summer is still delivering major vibes, from festival stages and chart action to sports drama and blockbuster entertainment. On this date in music history, August 9, 1995, the world lost Jerry Garcia at 53 — a moment that marked the end of an era for the Grateful Dead and their devoted Deadheads.
And this week brings another reminder of how much one creative voice can shape an entire sound: the music world is remembering producer William Orbit, whose work helped push electronic textures into mainstream pop.
🎧 MUSIC MOMENTUM: FESTIVALS, LEGENDS & NEW VIBES
William Orbit, the influential British producer behind Madonna’s Ray of Light era and work with Blur, All Saints, U2 and Pink, died at 69. His family confirmed the news this week, prompting tributes across the music world. Orbit’s Grammy résumé includes three wins, including Best Pop Vocal Album and Best Dance Recording for Ray of Light.
Ariana Grande is also signaling a reset. Billboard reports that she plans to step away from public appearances after the Eternal Sunshine Tour wraps, while also withdrawing from a planned appearance at Sunday in the Park With George. For fans, it is a reminder that even the biggest pop eras need breathing room.
Meanwhile, Green Day launched a 24/7 YouTube channel packed with music videos, live performances and more than 100 hours of previously unseen archival footage. And in San Francisco, Outside Lands is closing its Aug. 7–9 run today with RÜFÜS DU SOL, Baby Keem, Empire of the Sun, Death Cab for Cutie and more on the bill.
🏆 THE WEEK IN SPORTS & ENTERTAINMENT
Caitlin Clark delivered 26 points and five 3-pointers in Indiana’s 90–86 win over Chicago on Aug. 8 — then got an even bigger headline when the WNBA rescinded the technical foul that would have triggered an automatic one-game suspension. Clark can now play Tuesday against the New York Liberty.
In MLB, the Los Angeles Dodgers finally snapped a seven-game losing streak with a dramatic 2–1, 10-inning victory over Arizona. Shohei Ohtani drove in the go-ahead run in the 10th, while Kyle Tucker supplied the Dodgers’ eighth-inning homer. Despite the win, Los Angeles is averaging fewer than 3.5 runs per game over its last eight.
At the box office, Spider-Man: Brand New Day continues to swing far above expectations. Variety reports that the film has reached roughly $927 million worldwide and followed its enormous opening with another approximately $145 million domestically in its second weekend — one of the biggest second-weekend performances ever.
And the entertainment business is watching the proposed Paramount-Warner Bros. combination closely, with David Ellison telling theater owners that the combined company would guarantee a 30-film annual theatrical slate. The message is clear: theatrical movies remain a major part of the industry’s future.
🌟 FEATURED STORY: WILLIAM ORBIT’S SOUND LIVES ON
The producer who helped make electronica feel at home in pop.
The music community is mourning William Orbit, whose death at 69 was announced this week. Orbit’s career stretched across decades, but his defining mainstream breakthrough came through his creative partnership with Madonna on 1998’s Ray of Light.
The album was more than a successful comeback-era project. It represented a major sonic transformation, blending pop songwriting with techno, trance, house and atmospheric electronic production. Ray of Light peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 and became one of Madonna’s most influential albums.
Orbit’s Grammy record tells the story in numbers. His work with Madonna helped turn the title track into a Grammy winner, while the album itself won Best Pop Vocal Album. He later won another Grammy for Beautiful Stranger, giving him three Grammy wins from seven nominations.
- 69: Orbit’s age at the time of his death.
- 3: Grammy wins across his career.
- 7: Grammy nominations.
- 1998: The year Ray of Light reshaped Madonna’s sound.
His influence extended well beyond Madonna. Orbit worked with Blur, All Saints, U2, Pink and others, helping bring adventurous studio production into songs that reached enormous audiences.
Key Takeaway: Orbit’s legacy is a perfect example of how mood, technology and collaboration can change the emotional language of mainstream music. Decades later, that atmospheric approach still echoes through pop, dance and electronic music.
